La Goulue - Toulouse Lautrec's inspiration
A cautionary tale of alcoholism and the downfall of fame lost, a fickle mistress at best. The ruin of many for sure. All was not glamorous as it might have seemed
Toulouse Lautrec befriended the dancer Louise Weber and painted many a design for posters and canvasses but her temperamental behaviour and 'appetites' [La Goulue means 'The Glutton'! sic] meant she lost her starring role at the Moulin Rouge. Her alcoholism meant many presumed her dead but there is astonishing footage of her discovered in a show ground caravan in her fifties. Absinthe will do that to a gal!
