On this day in music history: January 5, 1990 - “Flood”, the third studio album by They Might Be Giants is released. Produced by They Might Be Giants and Clive Langer & Alan Winstanley, it is recorded at Skyline Studios in New York City from Mid - Late 1989. After releasing two critically acclaimed albums on indie label Bar/None/Restless Records, it is the major label debut for the New York based alternative rock duo. Working with veteran British pop and new wave producers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley (Madness, Elvis Costello, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Morrissey), the duos third full length album is  polished and lighter in tone than their previous indie label releases. It is an immediate smash at Modern Rock radio spinning off the hits “Birdhouse In Your Soul” (#3 Modern Rock) and “Istanbul (Not Constantinople)”, becoming TMBG’s most commercially successful album. The albums’ cover photo of a man in a boat made of nailed together washtubs, is taken by Life Magazine photographer Margaret Bourke-White during the Ohio River flood in January of 1937. In November of 2014, a limited edition reissue of the album pressed on clear green vinyl is released for Black Friday Record Store Day, by indie label Asbestos Records. “Flood” peaks at number seventy five on the Billboard Top 200, and is certified Platinum in the US by the RIAA.
