February's David BYRNE Newsletter

I could have gone in many directions with this playlist... For example, there is a whole slew of Francophone electronic artists. There are amazing African artists who sing in French or Creole. I decided on songs from the North - although the African Hip Hop and electronic influences are inescapable. This playlist selection goes back a little over 10 years, and in these songs they all sing in French.

Amylie is French Canadian, and like April L and Alanis M - she was a product of music theater and showbiz who similarly broke away. Camille is amazingly innovative - if you ever have a chance to catch her live - go! Teme Tan was born in Congo, grew up in Brussels - one can hear influences from Rhumba to Tropicalia in his music. Chilly Gonzalez is Canadian and has collaborated with Fiest and Drake. Guesch Patti started as a contemporary dancer - working with Roland Petit and Pina Bausch. The group Yelle even developed a translator app that allows listeners to listen in different languages.

So, it’s obvious they’re all very different, an eclectic creative bunch, and these are just the recent ones I know about!
