Ophiocordyceps formicarum, a fungi that attacks its hosts nervous system effectively turning them into zombies before sprouting from their bodies, as seen on an arthropod in Chiang Mai, Thailand.

Intelligent design by a psychotic sadist I would have it then. The Cordyceps consumes from within and when it has hadit's fill still keeping its prey alive it finally sprouts outward from the chosen body before leaving and hence killing its zombie host!
