ALBUM RE-POST of THE WEEK! Robyn Hitchcock "Spooked” 2004 | Twilightzone
Robyn Hitchcock "Spooked" 2004
Robyn Hitchcock enlisted the help of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings for Spooked-- his first full-length collaboration (not counting, of course, The Soft Boys and The Egyptians)-- and, consequently, it's the most "American" album he's ever made. The record is a departure from Hitchcock's usual eccentric left-of-the-dial pop, a left turn almost as unique as the story behind the album's creation: One of Hithcock's friends sent him a photo of the coronation of a new Miss Ohio named Robyn Hitchcock; the coincidence reminded the English singer of a striking live performance of Gillian Welch's "Miss Ohio"... - Pitchfork

Sometime after the release of 2003's sparse and slightly chilly Luxor, Robyn Hitchcock attended his first Gillian Welch show. Impressed by the duo's rootsy adherence to the organic -- two guitars, two voices -- he approached the longtime fans -- Hitchcock unknowingly signed David Rawlings' guitar at a Boston in-store in 1989 -- and exchanged digits. The unlikely partnership came to fruition at Nashville's Woodland Studios a few months later, and in just six days the lovely, intimate, and typically eccentric Spooked was born. Produced by Rawlings and culled from hours of off-the-cuff originals, Dylan songs, and general weirdness, Spooked harks back to his mercurial I Often Dream of Trains period. References to fungus and food abound, but wrapped in the wooly blankets of Rawlings' signature picking and Welch's winsome harmonies, they take on a fireplace warmth that renders them amiably nostalgic rather than blatantly surreal. On the dew-soaked opener, "Television," Rawlings lays down a beautiful descending lead that wouldn't have sounded out of place on the duo's debut, and its juxtaposition with Hitchcock's "bing a bon a bing bong" vocal entrance is jarring, but when the three of them come together mid-song to harmonize, the results are quietly majestic. Much of the record revisits -- musically at least -- Hitchcock's colorful past. "Everybody Needs Love," with its breathy urgency and electric sitar, sounds like something off of Element of Light, and the lurching "Creeped Out" -- featuring Welch on drums -- could have been the B-side to 1985's "Brenda's Iron Sledge." This is Hitchcock's most rewarding and creative endeavor since 1993's Egyptian-led Respect, and the fact that Rawlings and Welch are there as eager tools to flesh out his English netherworld makes the fellowship feel even more collaborative. It's a testament to both camps' willingness to try anything -- hearing Welch and Rawlings repeating "crackle, crackle, pop" beneath Hitchcock's spoken word sales pitch to extraterrestrials looking to vacation on Earth is a pretty good example -- that ultimately succeeds in making Spooked the left-field gem that it is. - Review by James Christopher Monger

GILLIAN RAWLINGS & DAVID RAWLINGS - THE SOUNDBOARD ARCHIVES - Big O
There's a wonderful compilation of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings soundboards over at Big O this morning and (again?! >>sigh<<) if you can stand the comments section and the troll plethora of neanderthal Americans hurling half baked and sophomoronic insults and sexist racist abuse at each other and anyone who stops by often enough it is really worth downloading This is truly a peach. Disc 1-3 of a six disc collection so there is more to come and this one has 42 tracks! Well worth having and the finest quality
TheMysticMuse over at Dime noted:
For some time now, I have been making “The Soundboard Archive” compilations. My live-music collection had become so massive that I thought it pointless to keep “multiple-to-the-nth-degree” versions of the same songs, especially for “non-jam” bands: thus the genesis of this project of mine.
This has been my methodology:
1. Choose a trade-friendly artist & venue (= “not on Dime’s NAB or NAV lists”) & collate all of the tracks from my “SBD” flac/shn files for said artist.
2. Listen to each track and choose what sounds to my ears to be the “best” version.
3. As needed, rename each chosen track.
4. Compile “the winners” into a “The Soundboard Archive” collection – after ensuring that NO included tracks have been officially released. (Each text file contains information about those shows/songs which had been officially released at the time of my compilation.)
ENJOY! Support the artist and buy the officially-released items!

this from Gillian Welch
The first of three collections that gather together a whopping 48 songs recorded in late 2002, in between Time (The Revelator)Soul Journey. An astounding cache of previously unheard Welch/Rawlings music, made even more astounding by the fact that these four-dozen tunes were laid down in the space of just a few days.

COVERS
'Hello In There'
John Prine
Aquarium Drunkard reminds us there is a great album of cover songs from Gillian Welch and her partner David Rawlings and includes a version of John Prine's 'Hello In There' and others such as Libba Cotton ('Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie')
Their twilcox says:
This year has been filled with surprises — most of them not particularly great. But a sneak attack Gillian Welch & David Rawlings covers album? That’s the definition of a nice surprise. Recorded live to tape this spring, All The Good Times is warm and loose, as the duo tackles tunes by Elizabeth Cotten, Bob Dylan, Norman Blake and a handful of trad-folk numbers …

A lovely set from Gillian Welch and husband David Rawlings from Big O the other day I haven't stopped listening to this for the past few hours. Whilst some are critical it seems of the duo's lack of original material and that one set sounds much like another, I still never tire of listening to them

& David Rawlings
As Big O notes:
Live at the Hoyt Sherman Auditorium, Des Moines, Iowa; August 12, 2007. Fairly to very good soundboard.
At the 2019 Academy Awards, Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings performed their Oscar-nominated song, When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings, from the Coen Brothers’ Western anthology The Ballad of Busters Scruggs. The Oscar went to Lady Gaga’s Shallow, from A Star Is Born.
That aside, here’s a recording of Gil and Dave’s first visit to Des Moines.

Nearly missed a nice set of early demos of Gillian Welch pre-Revival from the uniformly excellent MIDNIGHT CAFE
Now we love Gillian Welch and her hubby Dave Rawlings and this is a treat as it is demos of a star in the making . . . . . . this is just astonishing for a debut and if you do one thing today put on '455 Rocket' and if it don't have you dancing round the living room there's something wrong with boogie bone and you should seek immediate help from your Doctor!

Mo' COUNTRY
GILLIAN WELCH & DAVID RAWLINGS
- Hickory 1997
Another fine set from Big O this morning, a beautifully intimate recording from Hickory, North Carolina over at Bill and Claire’s House
Big O says:
Thanks to VACAVER; LJ (transfer); and to JerryRocks for sharing the show at Lossless Legs.at one point Gillian explains she is never quite sure about dogs and had to increase her foot tapping during one song to put off the hound near to her foot! This is back porch brilliance at it's clearest!
VACAVER noted:
I received this in a trade years ago and am releasing it to the public as I know a few others out there with it now; however, searches at the most popular trade list sites did not turn this up, so I’m helping it find wings. This is an extremely intimate show with Gil and Dave performing for a few people including some musicians whom I do not know the names of. To my understanding, this was a one-off house party, the hosts obviously two cats named Bill and Claire. Regardless of the venue and circumstances, this is an amazing performance with pristine audio. I hope you enjoy.
buckaroobonzai, Lossless Legs:
There are a number of house concerts hosted by Bill & Claire Jost the evening prior to the stage concerts at Acoustic Stage (which they coordinate unless I am mistaken).
gems, Lossless Legs:
End of track 7 into track 8 you can literally hear the North Carolina crickets outside. Truly an unbelievable capture.
Enjoy! I know I did!
Astonishingly good quality and as as intimate as it gets . . . . . . . .
