Captain Beefheart :: Observatory Crest
If there is indeed a season for every song, Beefheart’s “Observatory Crest” is unequivocally late summer. Particularly late summer in Los Angeles. A bright spot via the Captain’s oft-maligned lp, Bluejeans & Moonbeams, “Crest” hangs in a liminal space somewhere between revisiting a journal entry and bittersweet nostalgia. Beyond the vistas of the sparkling city stretched out below, it’s love song concerned with youthful wonder, reflection, and the freedom of nothing but time on your hands.
