Sex and Drugs and Rock & Roll ( Pinkpop 1981)
On this date in 1981, IAN DURY & THE BLOCKHEADS (including Wilko Johnson) performed at the 12th Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands, (June 8th, 1981).
Appearing on the same bill as Madness, UB40, U2, Fischer-Z, New Adventures and the Michael Schenker Groupn, were Madness. In Britain, such a disparate line-up would have been a disaster but not so for European festivals which did well out of an eclectic set of acts.
For the finale of SEX AND DRUGS AND ROCK N’ ROLL, Ian invited members of Madness and UB40 to join him on stage

Love the Guvnor Andy. Did you see him back in 79 at New Theatre - they stopped it towards the end, some idiots were spitting and trying to get on the stage if I remember rightly. Shame as they were really good. What a band - I loved Norman Watt-Roys' bass playing, such great feeling. Awesome. We went from that to see Zeppelin at Knebworth, which was a big disappointment after seeing the Blockheads. Oh happy days (there's another song there!).
I love it when you put these old vids up as it reminds me to go and play their music. Keep up the good work neighbour. Just remember: I come awake with the gift to womankind. You're still asleep but the gift don't seem to mind!! Genius. Cheers DD
I was there indeed. Terrible shame I was furious! We saw him a few times and last time in 1980 at Friars Club Aylesbury! Which made up for it! Superb gig and great venue. My wife was then about eight months pregnant with my son and as she sailed into view like a galleon, Ian spotted her and leaned into the microphone and uttered in his inimitable style the immortal words
“Ere, I know what you bin doin’!”
;)
Most welcome as always Dave and thanks so much for dropping by
