Yo La Tengo - Butchie’s Tune (2015)

From Yo La Tengo’s second covers LP Stuff Like That There, with original YLT guitarist Dave Schramm joining in. Here’s a wonderful, warm version of the Lovin’ Spoonful song, with Georgia on vocals.

I’ll leave and close the door so you won’t see me go

GUESS I’M DUMB

Yo La Tengo ARE truly extraordinary and in choosing this filler track from the Spoonful - [The Lovin’ Spoonful - Butchie’s Tune 1966 from the Hums album - it was to pacify drummer Joe Butler who had aspirations to sing but the rather too sweet and cloying warmth meant that Sebastian and Yanovsky did almost all of the vocals throughout the rest of the bands output) so to cover this side number is truly eclectic and means they really know their early pop sources.

Now I have mentioned that I was a massive schoolboy fan of the Spoonful and Butchie’s Tune meant a great deal to me way back then discussing as it did the breaking up with a girl and how to do it (sic) but here Yo La Tengo do their usual standard and play it absolutely straight and a fine job they do too!

Gloriously evocative and brings back sudden reminiscences of teenage angst and the first romances of early girlfriends

It was clearly so affecting two of the daily blogs have posted it!
