Speedy says:

The 1988 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame class included arguably the greatest British and American rock performers of all time, The Beatles and Bob Dylan. The former Mr. Robert Zimmerman was inducted by Bruce Springsteen, one of the countless rock stars who at one point in their carrer was labeled the "next Bob Dylan".  Dylan played All Along The Watchtower and Like A Rolling Stone at the ceremony supported by Harrison on the first and Springsteen on the second.

This soundboard recording captures Dylan ten years aftter his induction, on October 23, 1998, 28 years ago today, in Minneapolis. Dylan was on tour in support of his 30th studio album, Time Out Of Mind, which had been released in September 1997. The disc was a comeback for Dylan, who had not released any original material in over 7 years. Time Out Of Mind reached #10 on the Billboard charts in the US and won Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, Best Contemporary Folk Album and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.

Speedy says:
Van "The Man" Morrison was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1993, along with Cream, The Doors, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Sly & The Family Stone, just to name a few.  The ever reclusive and unpredictable Mr, Morrison skipped the ceremony, having Robbie Robertson accepted the honor on his behalf, while the Counting Crows were recruited to play Caravan.

This FM broadcast captures Van in Berkeley on October 21, 1979, 47 years ago today, on toiur in support of the album Into The Music, which he had released 2 months earlier. That disc was far more spiritual and less commercial than 1978's Wavelength, reflecting Morrison’s desire to make music that satisfied his soul. The disc received rave reviews, with Robert Christgau, for example, giving it an A and calling the album his best work since Moondance. Dave Marsh declared that the 2nd side of Into the Music was Van’s greatest side of music since Astral Weeks. Rolling Stone wrote "That's what this album is about, proudly and stunningly and with no apologies. Resurrection. Real Hope.”

1987: In August 1986, Crowded House released their self titled debut album, which garnered only limited attention initially. In December 1986, however, the 4th single from the album, Don't Dream It's Over, became a huge hit, climbing to #2 on the Billboard charts and carrying the album up to #12. The follow up single, Something So Strong, also became a top 10 hit in the US, reaching #7 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in support of that first album, in Mansfield, on September 17, 1987, 39 years ago today.

Speedy says:
1990: On March 4, 1990, Bowie embarked on his Sound & Vision tour a run of shows built upon an unusual premise. The set list for the tour would feature a host of his greatest hits, which Bowie would then retire from all future concert performances. For fans, it would supposedly be their last opportunity to hear classics such as Suffragette City, Ziggy Stardust, Rebel Rebel and Changes, just to name a few, in concert. Fortunately, Bowie didn’t completely abandon his old material in future tours, but at the time no one was quite certain how serious he was about the claim. This soundboard recording Bowie on September 14, 1990, 3 dozen years ago today, in Lisbon during 2nd European leg of the tour.
This is real nice and as I have said often the live ROIOs of David Bowie concert especially from the 90s are almost exclusively fine quality. This is no exception

"If you look at the page on this blog where I list all the concerts I've attended, you won't see any mention of the Fabulous Holmes Brothers. I easily saw them a half dozen times at blues clubs in New York City in the late 1980s, but for a host of reasons, all explained in my book, I never quite was able to keep track of when and where.  In any event, for those of you unfamiliar with them, the New York Times described the band as playing “Timeless, deeply soulful and uplifting gospel-drenched blues, street corner doo-wop, ballads, R&B, country and funk." This soundboard recording captures the Holmes Brothers in California on August 22, 2001, a quarter century ago this very day.”

Now we have featured the gospel stylings of blues brothers The Holmes boys before and thanks to Speedy he posted links to loads he has featured before at his blog space so he re-upped this one yesterday!

Speedy tells us:
"In addition to seeing Neil with CSNY in April 2000, I've seen him on 5 other occasions, 3 solo acoustic shows (1989, 1992 and 199), and 2 concerts with Crazy Horse, in Godfather of Grunge mode in 1991 and a presentation of Greendale in 2004. You never quite knew what you would get when you went to see Mr. Young.

Speaking of Crazy Horse, in 1996, Neil Young reunited with on again, off again backing band to record the album Broken Arrow. Filled with hard edged tunes featuring extended jams, Broken Arrow was another in a string of albums that featured Neil’s electric side. In fact the only album in that decade that highlighted his acoustic folk tunes was Harvest Moon in 1992.
Otherwise in the 1990’s, Neil was working with The Horse, Pearl Jam, and Sonic Youth to test just how loud he could play and how much feedback he could generate. Neil and Crazy Horse went on the road support of Broken Arrow including headlining the 1997 HORDE Tour, a fitting role for the man nicknamed the Godfather of Grunge. as noted above.
This soundboard captures Neil on August 10, 1997, 17 years ago today in Saratoga. Download this one, and be sure to turn it up loud when you listen!"

Speedy says: I've seen Squeeze on 2 occasions - in August 1981 at the South Mountain "Music Festival" - in reality, the side of a hill - and in August 1985, at Pier 84 in New York.

Today's post goes back to 1991 when Squeeze released their 9th studio album, entitled Play. The liner notes to the album are, appropriately, in the form of a play that incorporates the lyrics of the songs in a script that also references the plays Our Town by Thornton Wilder and Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett.  While the album did not have much commerical success, crtical reviews were strong, with AllMusic gving the disc 4 stars, calling it "Squeeze's best post-reunion album" and naming the tracks The Truth and Walk A Straight Line as "particular highlights".  This FM broadcast captures Squueze on tour in suppprt of Play about a year after its release, in Joliet on August 9, 1992, 34 years ago today.

THE HOLMES BROTHERS - SO MANY ROADS | A SPEEDY SPECIAL

Speedy dropped by to mention his following of The Holmes Brothers who we played earlier and he has several really noteworthy recordings over at his base camp that won’t disappoint. Not least for a couple with Joan Osbourne.

Speedy says:

The Holmes Brothers here at So Many Roads: For those of you unfamiliar with them, the New York Times described the band as playing “Timeless, deeply soulful and uplifting gospel-drenched blues, street corner doo-wop, ballads, R&B, country and funk. “ In the late 1980s. I got to see the Holmes Brothers several times in small nigh clubs in New York City, and trust me they are everything the Times says and then some. I was always amazed by their version of The Beatles tune “And I Love Her”, totally reworking it and making it their own. This soundboard recording captures The Holmes Brothers on April 12, 2001, 14 years ago today, in Canada. Download this one, and while you listen, pay close attention to And I Her Love as it may take you a minute to recognize it. And then go here to read more about this fine band.

Speedy says:

"I've seen Van Morrison 7 times, across 3 decades - the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s - and each time has been unique. Van changes up the set list from tour to tour, and you never know what mood he'll be in for a concert. For example, his September 1990 show at the Garden State Art's Center was a contemplative, introspective performance. In contrast, his April 1992 concert at the Paramount in New York was an upbeat religious celebration. Then again, his 1989 show at The Beacon Theatre was a bluesy affair, with a guest appearance by John Lee Hooker. With Van, you never quite know what you'll be seeing or hearing, which is part of the fun.

Today's post captures Van on tour in support of his 31st studio album, Magic Time, which was released on May 17, 2005. The disc debuted at #25 on the US Billboard charts and #3 in the UK. The title track deals with searching the past in order to capture a magic moment almost lost in memory. Many of the other tunes of the disc have the same nostalgic feel to them. For example, 2 tunes from Magic Time evoke memories of songs from the album St. Dominic’s Preview. The Lion This Time harkens back to Listen To The Lion, while Gypsy In My Soul echoes the song Gypsy. This FM broadcast finds Van in Germany on August 5, 2005, 21 years ago today, blending both past and present as he plays tunes from Magic Time as well as a host of earlier classics."
