"I've seen Van Morrison 7 times, across 3 decades - the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s - and each time has been unique. Van changes up the set list from tour to tour, and you never know what mood he'll be in for a concert. For example, his September 1990 show at the Garden State Art's Center was a contemplative, introspective performance. In contrast, his April 1992 concert at the Paramount in New York was an upbeat religious celebration. Then again, his 1989 show at The Beacon Theatre was a bluesy affair, with a guest appearance by John Lee Hooker. With Van, you never quite know what you'll be seeing or hearing, which is part of the fun. 

Today's post captures Van on tour in support of his 31st studio album, Magic Time, which was released on May 17, 2005. The disc debuted at #25 on the US Billboard charts and #3 in the UK. The title track deals with searching the past in order to capture a magic moment almost lost in memory. Many of the other tunes of the disc have the same nostalgic feel to them. For example, 2 tunes from Magic Time evoke memories of songs from the album St. Dominic’s Preview. The Lion This Time harkens back to Listen To The Lion, while Gypsy In My Soul echoes the song Gypsy. This FM broadcast finds Van in Germany on August 5, 2005, 21 years ago today, blending both past and present as he plays tunes from Magic Time as well as a host of earlier classics."

Speedy Says: Hiatt 1990 - Back To Back - #1:As mentioned in other posts on this blog, I think John Hiatt is one of rock’s most under rated and overlooked talents. His run of albums between 1987 and 1995 - Bring The Family, Slow Turning, Stolen Moments, Perfectly Good Guitar and Walk On - are filled with exceptional tunes. Many of those songs have been covered by artists such as Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffet and Joe Cocker. Unfortunately, Hiatt never achieved the commercial success he deserved.  This sounsboard recording captures him on tour in support of Stolent Moments, during the late show at the Bottom Line on July 26, 1990, 3 dozen years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

JS 1983 - Back To Back - #1: After John Sebastian left the Lovin Spoonful in 1968, he embarked on a solo career that never quite acheived the same level of critical or commercial success. The one major exception was his 1976 number 1 single, Welcome Back, which served as the theme song to the televison comedy Welcome Back, Kotter, starring Gabel Kaplan in the title role.  

This soundboard recording captures Sebastian some 7 years later, during the early show at Rockefeller's in Houston, playing that tune along with plenty of songs from his Lovin' Spoonful days. Download this one, then come back in a few hours for part 2 of this Back to Back set.

SPEEDY SAYS: "In late 1975, after releasing the album Blood On Tracks earlier in the year, Bob Dylan launched the Rolling Thunder Revue tour. Dylan recruited a host of other musicians to join him on this tour, including Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Mick Ronson, Kinky Friedman, T Bone Burnett, and Bob Neuwirth. Patti Smith was also invited to be part of the Revue, but politely declined. According to Larry Sloman, who documented the tour, "onstage it was like a carnival. After intermission, the curtain rose to an incredible sight, Bob and Joan, together again after all these years. The tour met with tremendous critical acclaim. For example, Clinton Heylin Wrote "The Rolling Thunder Revue shows remain some of the finest music Dylan ever made with a live band."  Them after releasing the album Desire in early 1976, Dylan went back on the road with the Rolling Thunder Review for a series of Spring shows.  This soundboard captures the tour in Austin on May 12, 1976, a half century ago today!  Note: this one was too big for MirrorCreator so tested a new transfer host.”

On June 21, 1965, The Byrds released their debut album, Mr. Tambourine Man. The disc would go to #6 on The Billboard charts, which would be the best commercial performance by any album released by the band. The title track would climb all the way to #1 on the singles charts. The band would have another #1 a few months later with the title track from their 2nd album, Turn, Turn Turn, and then incredibly, never score another top 10 single. As discussed in other posts, however, while The Byrds studio work peaked early on in their career, their live apex occurred much later, long after all the original members had left with the exception of Roger McGuinn. The line up of McGuinn, Clarence White, Gene Parsons, and Skip Battin, which came together in late 1969 and lasted until 1972, was group’s longest tenured configuration and the one which established the band’s reputation as dynamic live performers. This soundboard recording captures the band during their European tour in Spring 1971, on May 7, 1971, 55 years ago today.
