Marine Girls were an English post-punk group from Hatfield, Hertfordshire. The group was formed in 1980, by two sixth form school friends: Tracey Thorn and Gina Hartman. Originally, Thorn just played guitar and Hartman was the lead vocalist and percussionist. Thorn overcame her shyness and started singing too by the time they started making records. They were later joined by Jane Fox on bass and her younger sister, Alice, on joint vocals and percussion. The group formally disbanded in 1983 with Tracey Thorn continued working with Everything But The Girl and the Fox sisters went on to form Grab Grab The Haddock.

Tickets on sale this Thursday for new shows on June 8, 9 and 10.
After two instant sell-outs in April, Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn return to the 200-capacity MOTH Club in London for THREE more intimate shows onSunday June 8, Monday June 9 and Tuesday June 10.
They will perform again as a part-acoustic part-electronic duo accompanied by Rex Horan (double bass) and Family Stereo’s Blake Watt (guitar, vocals), playing songs from their 40-year careers as both a duo and solo artists.
The evening will consist of two sets and an interval. Ben and Tracey will be on stage at 8pm. There is no support. The venue will be mostly seated with some additional standing. Seats allocated on first come first served basis.Doors 7pm.
Tickets (max 2) on sale at 6pm GMT this Thursday 17 April via DICE.

Ben and Tracey will play two shows at London’s 200-capacity MOTH club in Hackney next month on Sunday April 6 and Monday April 7.
As a member of the pair’s UK mailing list, you are getting first access to tickets.
They will perform as a part-acoustic part-electronic duo accompanied by Rex Horan on double bass, drawing on songs from their 40-year careers as both solo artists and a duo. The events are billed simply as Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn. The venue will be mostly seated with some additional standing. Seats allocated on a first come first served basis.
You will receive another email tomorrow morning at 9am containing a special link to purchase tickets (maximum 2). Any tickets that are unsold by 6pm will go on general public sale. We ask you not to share the link. You will need the DICE app on your phone to access your tickets after purchase.
“We loved making Fuse together in 2022, and we wanted to do something else,” says Ben. “And that slowly turned into a conversation about playing live again.”
“When we pictured how, we realised we didn’t want to play the club bangers or fill a huge arena,” continues Tracey. “We just wanted to play a few songs - some we’d never done before - in a small club. Front room, friends and family vibe. If it goes well we hope to do more.”

Everything but the Girl (occasionally referred to as EBTG) are an English musical duo formed in Kingston upon Hull in 1982, consisting of lead singer and occasional guitarist Tracey Thorn and guitarist, keyboardist, producer and singer Ben Watt. hey have had four top ten singles and twelve top forty singles in the UK. Until 2022, the band were inactive, and have not performed publicly since 2000. After the group’s disbandment, Thorn and Watt released solo albums, and had indicated that it was unlikely they would ever record together again as Everything But the Girl. However, in November 2022, Thorn announced that a new album had been recorded for release in spring 2023.
Fuse is the upcoming eleventh studio album by British duo Everything but the Girl, scheduled to be released on April 21, 2023 through Buzzin’ Fly and Virgin Records. It is their first studio album in 24 years following Temperamental (1999). The album was preceded by the single “Nothing Left to Lose” on January 10, 2023, followed by “Caution to the Wind” and “Run a Red Light” in February and March, respectively.
The duo began working on the album in March 2021, recording it in secret at both their home and a studio outside of Bath, England with the engineer Bruno Ellingham, with Tracey Thorn stating that they were “aware of the pressures of such a long-awaited comeback, so we tried to begin instead in a spirit of open-minded playfulness”.
Ben Watt told the NME that they “wanted to come back with something modern-sounding. […] We just wanted to make a piece of work that would sound great now in 2023. That was the driver.” He also elaborated that Fuse is not “a pandemic album or a lockdown album - it just struck us that the time was right after 23 years of waiting”, also echoing Thorn’s statement that the intention was to be “a bit playful and experimental to see what happens. Long out of print sadly now and bought this when it came out (along with the Young Marble Giants debut) and have followed Tracey Thorn ever since up to her work with partner Ben.

The debut album by the Marine Girls is one of the most wilfully amateurish releases of its era, which is not necessarily a bad thing. When it was first released on Daniel Treacy's Whaam! label in 1981, it undoubtedly sounded impossibly shoddy and nearly inept, filled with deliberately out-of-tune vocals, extremely minimal guitar and bass, and almost no percussion. However, its place as one of the pillars of the twee pop scene, along with the Young Marble Giants' "Colossal Youth", is now incontestable, and what once might have seemed haphazard instead sounds refreshingly artless and slyly provocative.
Tracey Thorn, whose vocals would gain much more technical polish during her years in Everything But the Girl, sings with a sort of offhand grace, while Alice Fox' more tuneless yelp sounds like a precursor to Kathleen Hanna or Sleater-Kinney. The songs are monochromatic, though a few, particularly the opening "In Love," manage to marry memorable tunes to the group's deliberate minimalism. This is not an album for anyone who requires a lot of studio polish, but "Beach Party" is far from the grating tunelessness that some early reviewers labeled it.
"Beach Party" was named as one of Kurt Cobain's 50 favourite albums in his diaries.

I nearly forgot or overlooked this little gem from Aquarium Drunkard from the wonderful Ben Watt. Now I have enjoyed much of Ben's work since hearing him as part of 'Everything But The Girl' with partner Tracey Thorn whom I had discovered earlier on in The Marine Girls. As a duo I loved their work and as a dj compiler of sounds followed Ben too. Since his seemingly unique diagnosed condition with a rare vasculitic auto-immune disease, Churg-Strauss Syndrome (EGPA)that very nearly killed him he has somehow managed to maintain a steady unfaltering stream of work and continues to astound

I had long been a fan of Tracy Thorn solo work and first came across her in Marine Girls and the subsequent 'Everything But The Girl' with her partner Ben Watt was a great sound of the period but this single which I bought upon release and in the 12' single version but surprised by the crossover into dance music of the period . . . . . . . still really like both of them and Ben's wonderful mixtape selections are discussed elsewhere here
