ALBUMS THAT SHOULD EXIST : More VH-1 Storytellers ED SHEERAN - DUBLIN 2015

Ed Sheeran - VH-1 Storytellers, Whelan's, Dublin, Ireland, 1-24-2015

Paul at ATSE says: A couple of weeks ago, I posted a Taylor Swift album. Now, I'm posting an Ed Sheeran one. I'm starting to threaten to post music from currently popular music acts! ;) The reason Sheeran has come across my radar screen is because he did an episode of "VH-1 Storytellers" in 2015. Here it is.

I plan on posting most of the Storytellers episodes I can find. But most is not the same as "all." There are a handful that I've found that I won't be posting because I just can't stand the music. (For instance, Kanye West, the Backstreet Boys, Jay-Z, and Kid Rock.) With Sheeran, I was on the fence. But I gave this album a listen, and I decided it's okay. Not my favorite by any means, but there's real musical talent here.

Perhaps I was helped by the fact that this doesn't suffer so much from modern overproduction issues due to it being a relatively stripped down live performance. Most of the songs feature just Sheeran and his acoustic guitar.

From what I can gather, the Storytellers show was basically finished in 2012. But three years later, it came back for one more episode, at Sheeran's request. Since then, in 2023, the show has kind of been revived by CMT, a country music channel, and has broadcast a few episodes of country artists. I haven't been able to find any full episodes of those.

As I write this in 2024, Sheeran is massively popular, and has sold over 150 million albums worldwide. At the time of this concert, he had only released two albums. But both of them were massively popular. For instance, his second album, "x" (a.k.a. "Multiply"), sold about ten millions albums worldwide. So even though he performed in a club that could only hold a couple hundred people, he had a super enthusiastic crowd. As you'll hear listening to this, it sounds to be mostly women, who screamed quite a lot and also sang along with the songs.

But the crowd noise you'll hear is actually toned way down, because I ran all the songs through the MSVEP audio editing program specifically to separate out the crowd noise. I didn't remove it entirely, since it was part of the overall sonic picture, but I lowered the volume of the crowd way down during the songs, while keeping it high at the ends of songs.

It seems some extra songs from this performance were made available on the Internet but not as part of the TV show. I couldn't find them. If you have them, let me know and I'll add them in.

This album is 56 minutes long.

Now I get that after his meteoric rise to fame from his clear and skilful singer songwriting there is always backlash - especially us Brits love to hype a star up and then knock ‘em down. I don’t personally do this and remain almost frighteningly loyal and usually for life. I LIKE him! I don’t really care who knows and care nothing for any naysaying or cancel culture BS.

I LIKE HIM OKAY? Got it? Now Get!

Ed Sheeran - Promo gig for SUBTRACT :: Live at Eventim Apollo London 27/03/2023 | Big O

Ed Sheeran - Big O

ED SHEERAN
Live Debut of “Subtract”
London 2023

Live at the Eventim Apollo, London, UK; March 23, 2023 (broadcast on May 10, 2023). Very good audio (ripped from web stream).

In this intimate live performance at the Eventim Apollo, Ed Sheeran will showcase his brand-new release, - (pronounced “subtract”), in full for the first time alongside a 12-piece band that includes Aaron Dessner of The National, who also produced the album. In this show, Sheeran will hone in on the series of life events that led him to pen the album. [The album was released on May 5, 2023.]

“I’m delighted to share my Subtract album show with you,” Sheeran said. “I was really nervous on the day, as it was my first time performing the new album tracks. The show was brought to life by Aaron and the incredible band, and it was an honor to stand beside them. It was an emotional night, but I’m so pleased we got to document it.”

Well thanks Big O! This is plain just lovely . . .new songs for the new album and unlike many fickle music fans, I am so loyal to people I like. Not for me the 'when folks get so popular we end up hating them', [what IS that about!?]

The boy's a master and this is no exception and is superb quality . . . now go buy the album!

ED SHEERAN

Big O post some nice BBC Radio 2 broadcast ED SHEERAN this morning from last month's Jo Whiley show
I realise there is a backlash against his popularity but I like him

As I comment at Big O where the first response is an accusation of being soporific:
Each to their own and I like him! His entire story is interesting and, whilst prolific to the point of possibly needing an editor, (Galway Girl?) he is amongst the most popular singer songwriters of the day. As the text (sic) says ‘most talented, and loved’ and with good reason. The backlash beloved of the British to set people up only to knock them right down when deemed ‘too big for their boots’ is sad and I never really got it. I am unusually loyal. Talent? Certainly. Who else do you know who can hold a crowd the size of Glastonbury with two acoustic guitars and a loop station. He paid his dues working hard on the circuit before gaining such success. Kudos I say.

Two performances over the weekend that struck me

One/ Ed Sheeran and I realise there is something of a backlash against him and yet at the BBC Biggest Weekend he took the role as opening act consciously presumably as he stated his task was to warm up the crowd, which frankly is astonishingly humble for a superstar who can hold the main stage at Glastonbury on his own (and I am aware people said he wouldn't be able to ) This all so he could do two full sets in a day as he was to play Manchester later on that evening so midday opener at Swansea and frankly watching carefully two things occurred to me 1/ he can hold any size audience with a guitar and a Loop Master on his own. His control of which means he can self harmonise and play backing to himself with guitar and a keyboard featuring on only one track (see below) the other things occurs to me this is no autotune performance and he is a consummate pro in what he does and probably has perfect pitch. I think many people watching this will not fully understand how complicated a job he does of performance and made it look relaxed and easy. I like him! Did you guess . . . . . . . .

Two/

Sigrid was on Sunday Brunch on Chanel 4 and this young woman keeps making me sit up and take notice first on the Graham Norton show and now over Brunch . . . . .

This again is no pre-recorded autotune performance and with mere guitar & keyboard accompaniment and a harmonising backing singer [who needs must cannot be any slouch in the singing department either] sang one of her 'hits' 'High Five' as live as as it can get . . . . . .this lassie is a wonderment!

UPDATE - performance deleted - Well Channel 4 removed THAT pretty swiftly so here's the official version

Astonishing and reaffirms my faith in humanity, the young folks and the desire and power to create music and to just well,  sing!

UPDATE - two low points were

Taylor Swift phoning in a six song mini set dressed as a cheap 70's hooker, the sound was appalling and her microphone appeared to not be working from the outset but I consider that a blessing from what we had later on. Stomping around the stage flat footed in your wellies does not make you Beyonce! Truly dreadful monotonous rubbish

Frankly Rita Ora on before put her to shame with energy, choreography, originality of dress, dancing and out performed and out sung. Rita always looks like she is enjoying herself! Despite the sad momentary tribute to Avicii. Great sound and the girl can SING! The headline act was deservedly Florence and The Machine who I enjoyed on the BBC Friday night show but missed here . . . . . .
SORRY Back to High Points!!!

That and the fact she's gorgeous!

Back to the low points . . . . . . . .

Liam Gallagher at the Coventry site for the BBC Weekend headline act with Beady Mincers or whatever, who appeared to sing almost entirely through his nose which has obviously taken a battering along the way as he can no longer sing (did he ever? I thought he was a shouter! - ED) a smattering of Oasis songs brightened it up because lets face it there's nothing else in the set worth paying attention too. Truly awful! Meaningless drivel

ED SHEERAN
New York 2017 [no label, 1CD]

Live at The Honda Stage, iHeartRadio Theater NY, New York, NY; March 7, 2017. Very good audio
(ripped from HD webcast).
On March 3, 2017, English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran released his third studio album, Divide.
Ed Sheeran’s third album Divide has shifted 432,000 copies in its first three days on sale in the UK. The British artist is on track to take the record for one of the best-ever opening weeks. Billboard added that the most popular format for the LP is physical, with sales for CD and vinyl at 63 per cent, while digital accounts for 31 per cent of sales and streaming making up the remainder. Sheeran told GQ he was up against Adele’s record. “She’s the only person I need to sell more records than. That’s a big fucking feat because her last album sold 20 mllion. But if I don’t set her as the benchmark then I’m selling myself short…”
