Like Townes Van Zandt, I think I prefer the unadorned Sandy Denny. The demos of many of her songs are just so much better - just Sandy and piano. Actually the full instrumental version was recorded for her final LP Rendezvous, but not included cause there were too many ballads (a mistake obviously)

I miss you more than I can say

This  demo was recorded at her home in Byfield in December 1975; she accompanied herself on piano. This track was included in the bonus CD of A Boxful of Treasures, 2004 and on I've Always Kept a Unicorn, released 2016. Some verses differ slightly from the final version.

A KOSTAS PROFILE

Founded in 1964 as a bluegrass-based trio called the Strawberry Hill Boys by singer/guitarist Dave Cousins, the group originally consisted of Cousins, guitarist/singer Tony Hooper, and mandolinist Arthur Phillips, who was replaced in 1968 by Ron Chesterman on bass. That same year, the band --now rechristened The Strawbs, and doing repertory well beyond the bounds of bluegrass music -- briefly became a quartet with the temporary addition of Sandy Denny, who stayed long enough to record a relative handful of tracks with the group on the Hallmark label before joining Fairport Convention. (The album would be issued several times, under the titles All Our Own Work and Sandy & the Strawbs, among others.) In 1969, the Strawbs were signed to A&M Records, and cut their first album, the acoustic-textured Strawbs, that same year. 

In 1967, folksinger Dave Cousins heard a young woman named Sandy Denny singing at a club in London, and was so impressed with her voice that he immediately invited her to join his group, the Strawbs. Before the year was out, Sandy & the Strawbs landed a deal with a small label based in Denmark and recorded an album, though a few months after it was released, Denny parted ways with the Strawbs and joined Fairport Convention, replacing founding vocalist Judy Dyble.

I absolutely love this song. Sandy Denny recorded this tune with the Strawbs before joining Fairport Convention. There’s a version with strings but I think I like this one a bit more as Sandy’s vocals stand out more.

Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant and Fairport Convention’s Sandy Denny outside Melody Maker’s Annual Poll Awards in London on September 15th, 1970. 

That night, Robert won Best Male Singer, while Sandy was chosen Best Female Singer. 

A year later the two duetted on the track ‘The Battle of Evermore’ for Led Zeppelin’s untitled fourth album, which ended up being the only time a guest vocalist appeared on a Led Zeppelin song.

FOTHERINGAY (feat. SANDY DENNY) : : NOTHING MORE

 A SONG OF THE EVENING

Somebody points out at the top of the comments on YouTube for this heart wrenching song that you can look in someone's eyes and know they are hiding a hurt inside and this is very true and especially so for Sandy. A lifelong alcoholic intimates there were things troubling her. She passed away from a fall (whilst drunk?) it is alleged and I only wish she had been able to access therapy specialising in addiction. 

The majority of entrenched addicts have experienced abuse and of those the majority have endured sexual abuse as a child (which was my specialism as a therapist). Now I am not saying that is what happened to Sandy but that she abused substances whether legal or not so that her life was cut short by some terrible inner demon. Outwardly the easy going gal with the one of the boys bonhomie with a cheery disposition and the haunting voice barely hid the trouble in mind . . . . . . . just my opinion and here is another reason why

 SANDY DENNY

Born this day in 1947, I have shared somewhere prolly here sometime before that we live near the old Manor Recording Studio where Richard Branson first set up recording and I missed the opportunity or to be fair turned down the opportunity to go see Fairport Convention with Sandy as a bunch of pals when to the Manor and as local urchins and the times being what they were they just used to let us in to play in the gardens and smoke. This day they all went and met Fairport not even knowing they would be there (hence my saying I couldn't be bothered) and Sandy signed a friends plaster cast as he had broken his arm and the rest of the band joined in! I wasn't furious at missing this AT ALL! She was and is a legend but she was a complex person beset by alcoholism and was prone to self harm and throw herself downstairs and suchlike as attention seeking behaviour we think but boy she could sing like no-one else. We miss you Lady Fotheringay!

A nice set from Sandy Denny from Enoch over at Floppy Boot Stomp. A bit 'noisy' but highly listenable and well worth having as there are scant few recordings of her these days and while standards are improving all the time this is from 1977 so not faultless but really nice to have. Thanks guys at FBS and Enoch in particular . . . . . . 

Denny is of course a tragic figure in folk and taken way too early but drinking, drugs and poor mental health took her way too early. The substance abuse possibly as some early misguided attempt to self medicate and this caused breakdowns of relationships with bandmates, friends and most notably with her husband, fellow musician Trevor Lucas who after this concert here, eventually fled with their daughter Georgia, back to his native Australia fearing for their daughter's safety whilst in the charge of a drunken parent, only to return a short time later to attend the hospital and turn off her life support after a 'fall' down the stairs at her home in Byfield (Northampton) and this, while possibly intoxicated, saw her tragically premature death at 31.

Denny was a complex, damaged and vulnerable person and possibly in retrospect what we now would describe as bi-polar (manic depressive at the time) and frequently self harmed often hurling herself off things and down stairs so frequently it became known as her 'party piece' to garner attention. This tour to promote the poorly received last album 'Rendezvous' was completed at the Royalty Theatre and this was the last time she would play in public. 5 months later she was dead. 

This . . . . . . . perhaps one of the most hauntingly beautiful sad songs of all time reflecting what it is to become aware of our sense of mortality . . . . . . the unanswerable question

Robbed of one of the most hauntingly ethereal voices of our generation at least we have sources like this . . . . .

not entirely sure who is on this set and yet it sounds like Dave Swarbrick on tracks like "Who know

s . . . " but it is not Fairport but billed as a solo concert at Eltham Well Hall Open Theatre hence the open air sound quality but it's worth it . . . Sandy her usual chatty self and that voice peerless and ringing out across the afternoon . . . . .Richard of course needs no introduction here quite simply our best guitarist bar none and singer songwriter without equal!
