BONNIE RAITT
Not the first Bonnie Raitt album I bought (I think that honour goes to Luck of The Draw') and didn't get it when it came out but much later as it hasn't been one of my favourites. That honour goes to 'Luck' I think, alongside perhaps the live album 'Roadtested' which I really love not least for it's version of 'Dimming of The Day' on it. Still it is a fine album and a kind of staple for fans for me I think it was over produced somewhat by the Was and it was a slow burner as Jeff Harris says
On this day in music history: March 21, 1989 - “Nick Of Time”, the tenth album by Bonnie Raitt is released. Produced by Don Was, it is recorded at Ocean Way Studios, Capitol Studios, Hollywood Sound in Hollywood, CA, and The Record Plant in Los Angeles, CA from Mid - Late 1988. Her first album for new label Capitol Records, it follows nearly two decades with Warner Bros Records which produced several critically acclaimed but modest selling albums. Working with Was (Not Was) bassist turned producer Don Was, he assembles a group of top notch musicians including members of Raitt’s own touring band along with studio veterans including Ricky Fataar (drums) and Paulinho Da Costa (percussion) as well as other guests such as Herbie Hancock (keyboards), John Jorgenson (guitar), and David Crosby (background vocals). It initially gets off to slow start but gains momentum throughout the year. The album wins three Grammy Awards including Album Of The Year in 1990. It spends three weeks at number one on the Billboard Top 200, topping the chart exactly one year after making its debut. In 2001, the album is remixed and released as a DVD-A disc, with a new 5.1 surround mix, also featuring the original stereo mix. Issued on vinyl on a limited basis back in 1989, it is remastered and reissued as a 180 gram LP in 2014. The vinyl edition is also reissued by Capitol Records in 2017, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the label. “Nick Of Time” is certified 5x Platinum in the US by the RIAA.
