I’m in a book club with some friends and this past month we read “Half of A Yellow Sun” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Brutal in parts, but highly recommended (a movie was made of the book in 2014). There’s a scene where the characters are arguing over the merits of different highlife musicians (the story takes place in the early and late 60s), so of course I wanted to make an appropriate playlist. I didn’t include all the greats, but I went past that era and included Fela, Burna Boy, and a few contemporary Nigerian artists who are becoming well known everywhere. -David Byrne |
