Searching for a Guru - Van Morrison in the 80s - Aquarium Drunkard
With Common One, Van Morrison embarked on the most distinctive public soul-search of any artist on the radar of the popular consciousness. Retrospectively regarded by many as his most accomplished record, the string of releases to follow would serve as companions in staking out a New-Age Celtic spirituality built on channeling legacies as far flung as Jimmy Rogers, Ray Charles, Christmas Humphrey, and L Ron Hubbard. Critical as any of these to Van’s Celtic Guru years was an interpretation of Alice Bailey’s theosophy. The ideas were laid out on Van’s 1980 masterwork, but the seven rays never radiated as brightly as they did on Beautiful Vision.

I have said they feature an extraordinary range of music from the commonly well known Love, Eric Clapton (early thankfully) Judy Collins, Lovin' Spoonful, Tom Paxton, Paul Butterfield Blues Band to name but a few but also really obscure folks I had never heard of one of which I feature here because they cover a great Grandpa Jones classic 'Bald Headed End of The Broom' by the Dry City Scat Band (say what now?) which I first heard from the wonderful Waterson Carthy Band and, any excuse I know, but I play that here too! (Norma we miss you!)
But we start the day (week?) with an absolute storming classic from Tim Buckley and his version of Wayfaring Stranger and if you listen to one thing this week make it this . . . . . . . . .
Nice one from draftervoi (so the notes say!) via so many roads today and whilst it is billed as SQUEEZE it is really a studio session with Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford only but none the worse for that.
This is the year of one of my very favourite Squeeze albums 'Some Fantastic Place' but this is by way of a radio interview session around that time and you will want to pick through the tracks after first listens I imagine and thus it isn't the complete album and misses off some of my favourite songs from that era not least the title track (sic!) [presumably these will show up on the next volume advertised for 22 Nov]
Still it is high quality and really worth a listen . . . .watch this space for the next session!

Nice piece on Chet Baker over at Aquarium Drunkard's Videodrome series
When Bruce Weber’s documentary Let’s Get Lost premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, its subject was already dead. Four months earlier, on May 13th, 1988, famed jazz musician Chet Baker was found dead on the street below his hotel room in Amsterdam, apparently having fallen from his second-story window. Heroin and cocaine were found in his room; an autopsy report later found both drugs in his system. He was fifty-eight years old. That evening in Paris, all the jazz clubs were silent.
Rather than characterise Baker as the trumpet-wielding James Dean or a playboy jazz rebel, Weber shows Baker for who he was: a deeply flawed man, with bruises and blemishes and all. The contrast between Baker’s personality and musicality makes Weber’s profile of Baker that much more heartbreaking. How could someone of so few words be so lyrical and poignant in their musicianship? How could someone who lived so crudely play so gently and sing so sweetly?
