 JEFF BECK

Jeff Beck -1944-2023

UPDATED 14th Jan 2023

Of course there has been an outpouring of shock and grief at Jeff Beck’s passing away at 78  on the 10th of this month and I have listed some of the best boots and ROIOs here and there are profiles and official releases too abounding but I would encourage folk to seek out official albums wherever you can and your usual sources for same . . . . . . . It would seem Truth and Beck-Ola are still readily available for around a fiver over at Amazon, Blow By Blow not so much and couldnt find it under an extortionate price (nearly £30!) . . . . . . .so go to your local record shop and see what you can find there’s loads out there 18 with Johnny Depp is out there from 2020 which is fun too!

BOOTS:ROIOs

Perhaps my favourite thus far is this double beauty from the legendary Cozy Powell archives (5 CDs originally) :

From Jobe over at BASE (VOODOO WAGON)

Check the notes Jobe posted from the original sharer for the lineup and details, but this is the best boot thus far (IMHO)

In terms of live recordings The Boss replies with this

Jeff Beck - Live Detroit and Milwaukee
May 9, 1975 and May 10, 1975
Liberated Bootleg
aka - This Blows

Soundboard @320

Staggering playing and if a tad too frenetic for these ears (check out the guest spot of John McLaughlin on Power in Milwaukee it is astonishing but MAD)   . . . . . . this is an awesome addition to the Beck oeuvre I admit

BEST OF THE REST

is this one . . . . . . again from FLOPPY BOOT STOMP

Jeff Beck Rehearsals Japan Tour 2000 - FLOPPY BOOT STOMP

Jeff Beck - CHICAGO 1972 - Big O

JEFF BECK R.I.P. 1944 - 2023

Jeff Beck, the beloved guitar player who rose to fame with English rock band The Yardbirds, has died on January 10. He was 78. His family confirmed Beck’s death in a statement on Wednesday. “On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s Passing,” the statement began. “After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family asks for privacy while they process this tremendous loss.”

Beck rose to fame in 1965 when he took over as guitarist for The Yardbirds, replacing Eric Clapton. The next year, he founded his own group, The Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. They released two albums together: Truth and Beck-Ola.  After The Jeff Beck Group broke up, he joined Vanilla Fudge for a short stint and later recreated The Jeff Beck Group with new members. In 1972, he fronted Beck, Bogert & Appice before breaking up in 1974.

He also recorded two albums in the ’70s as a solo act called Blow by Blow and Wired. He released Loud Hailer in 2016. “I really wanted to make a statement about some of the nasty things I see going on in the world - greed, lies, injustice - and I loved the idea of being at a rally and using this loud device to shout my point of view,” he said in a bio on his official website. Most recently, the rocker released a collaborative album titled 18 with Johnny Depp in July 2022. - people.com

Often described as one of the greatest guitarists of all time, Beck - whose fingers and thumbs were famously insured for £7m – was known as a keen innovator. He pioneered jazz-rock, experimented with fuzz and distortion effects and paved the way for heavier subgenres such as psych rock and heavy metal over the course of his career. He was an eight-time Grammy winner, recipient of the Ivor Novello for outstanding contribution to British music and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame both as a solo artist and as a member of the Yardbirds.

Musicians and longtime friends began paying tribute minutes after the news broke. On Twitter, Jimmy Page wrote, “The six stringed Warrior is no longer here for us to admire the spell he could weave around our mortal emotions. Jeff could channel music from the ethereal. His technique unique. His imaginations apparently limitless. Jeff I will miss you along with your millions of fans.”

“With the death of Jeff Beck we have lost a wonderful man and one of the greatest guitar players in the world,” Mick Jagger wrote. “We will all miss him so much.”

“Now Jeff has gone, I feel like one of my band of brothers has left this world, and I’m going to dearly miss him,” Ronnie Wood tweeted.

Ozzy Osbourne tweeted, “I can’t express how saddened I am to hear of Jeff Beck’s passing. What a terrible loss for his family, friends & his many fans. It was such an honour to have known Jeff and an incredible honor to have had him play on my most recent album.” - theguardian.com
