Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley Selects 10 Gems From The Band’s Archive - AQUARIUM DRUNKARD

Sonic Youth's Steve Shelly - 10 Gems - Aquarium Drunkard

Sonic Youth played its last shows just over a decade ago. But the band’s legacy lives on thanks to an ever-expanding archive available on Bandcamp. Curated by drummer Steve Shelley and longtime sound engineer Aaron Mullan, the archive swells with live tapes stretching back to the mid-1980s, crucial rarities collections, and stray tracks rescued from out-of-print singles, internet mixes, and random comps. Aquarium Drunkard spoke with Steve Shelley to get his thoughts on a few gems that await listeners.

John Hiatt - The Classic Canadian Performance 1988 - Big O

More Memphis in The Meantime . . . . . . . . another set from John Hiatt with the crew that featured Sonny Landreth on guitar live in Ottawa Canada 1988 and from Big O no less . . . . . . wading past the schoolchildren playing peeing contest in the filth ridden adn racist sexist drivel that is the comments section but thi is well worth having and is fine radio broadcast quality (again?)

The Confidence Man In Canada
Live at Barrymore’s, Ottawa, Canada; September 30, 1988.
Very good FM broadcast.

GEORGE HARRISON - THE PIRATE SONG! - RUTLAND WEEKEND TELEVISION

The previous post about Ringo's Last word with George really saddened me and brought my mood way down. We miss George and are all the poorer for our loss. I often think about Dhani and Olivia and the new film may help go some way to bring us cheer . . . . . .this post below and comment by Dhani made me smile . . . . . . . but first I needed this to really raise a smile. George knew very well what a sense of humour was worth. Though he was known to not suffer fools as he had a professional lifetime of putting up with journalists and their idiotic questioning . . . . . . so in time we needed a pirate to strike fear in their hearts!

No?                          I think so!

There’s just a lot of toast eating. - Dhani Harrison, 2021

 GEORGE'S LAST WORDS TO RINGO

The last weeks of George's life, he was in Switzerland, and I went to see him, and he was very ill. And, you know, he could only lay down. And while he was being ill and I'd come to see him, I was going to Boston, cos my daughter had a brain tumour. And I said, "Well, you know, I've got to go, I've got to go to Boston" and he was... phew, it's the last words I heard him say, actually... And he said, "Do you want me to come with you?" Oh, God. So, you know, that's the incredible side of George."

DANGEROUS MINDS - DEVO’S GERALD V. CASALE TALKS ABOUT HIS NEW MUSIC VIDEOS AND THE VERTIGINOUS PACE OF DE-EVOLUTION!

 JOCKO HOMO!

GERALD V CASALE [DEVO] = DANGEROUS MINDS

Great interview with Gerry Casale from DEVO . . . . . . . . . over at Dangerous Minds!

With the human species seemingly hurtling toward the center of a body-pulping, dream-pulverizing vortex, Dangerous Minds sent one of its bubble-eyed dog boys from the recombo DNA labs in the Valley for a briefing from Jerry Casale. DEVO’s chief strategist, film director, songwriter, singer, and bassist shed light on our dire predicament as few others could. He also discussed his new solo music video, “I’m Gonna Pay U Back,” and revealed his plans for its upcoming 3D sequel, “The Invisible Man,” news that is balm for our awful hurt. A lightly edited transcript follows the link [above].

LOVE LOVE LIVE! - ARTHUR LEE & LOVE (LIVE!) - The Twilight Zone

COMING THROUGH TO YOU -

THE LOVE LIVE RECORDINGS 1970 - 2004

Twilight zone continues its posting Love album and classic remix remasters no longer in print. I had been wanting this live album for years and it never seemed to get below £40 and then went to over £80 so I reckon its out of print by now and folks are hunting around for it. Four discs of the Arthur Lee experience and Love Live!

TWILIGHT (Ride Your Pony) says:

...Their albums, especially 1967's classic Forever Changes but also their self-titled debut as well as Da Capo and Four Sail, contain one wonderful performance after another and mark Lee as one of the greatest innovators of 1960s folk-rock. His fascinating albeit cryptic lyrics combine beautifully with music that incorporates orchestration, brass, psychedelia, and soul. Capable of both explosive guitar-based hard rockers and folky ballads as delicate as the Left Banke's "Walk Away Renee", he tapped influences ranging all the way from Jimi Hendrix to the Byrds to Mexican brass ensembles... to be continued...

...There are also a few live tracks on old Love albums, and there have been some poorly recorded relatively recent concert releases. What has been missing is a comprehensive and high-quality live set... to be continued...

...Featuring liner notes by Rolling Stone's David Fricke, the Doors' Robby Krieger, and guitarist Mike Randle, whose band Lemonade backed Arthur Lee in his later years, the 61-track package includes: Disc 1 for the 1970s (including shows at the Fillmore East and West), Disc 2 for the 1990s, Disc 3 for the 2000s, and Disc 4 (entitled "A Fan's View") rounding up performances between 1977 and 1994. Occasionally (especially on portions of that fourth disc), the sound quality disappoints; but for the most part, it's excellent.

...Coming Through to You contains nothing recorded during the group's peak years on vinyl because, as the liner notes point out, Love was more heard of than seen during the late 1960s...

...You will, however, find lots of songs here that first appeared on those glorious early albums. The band's eponymous debut, which is often compared to the Byrds' work from the same period, is well represented with performances of "My Flash on You", "Signed D.C." (acoustic and electric versions), "Can't Explain", "My Little Red Book" and "Message to Pretty". From the adventurous, psychedelic Da Capo, the group's second album, come readings of "Orange Skies", "Que Vida","She Comes in Colors", "7 and 7 Is" and "Stephanie Knows Who" early all of the disc's essential tracks. Also here are versions of almost everything on the original Forever Changes plus such later standouts as "Singing Cowboy", "August" and "Always See Your Face". A few noteworthy covers are also on the bill, including Hendrix's "Little Wing", John Lennon's "Instant Karma" (in a medley with Love's "Everybody's Gotta Live"), and Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightning". Released by RockBeat Records, the set has been produced by David Skye, with the involvement of Lee's widow, Diane Lee. Randy Perry has remastered. RYP

ZigZagWanderer - Search for Rare ROIO of Captain Beefheart Portmouth '75 and Glasgow '73

We have been contacted (who's "WE"?!The royal we? Delusions of grandeur? ED) by the legendary ZigZagWanderer and he is looking for a particular Beefheart boot so I thought I would try and draw attention and publicise the search. I don't have it and couldn't find it in the vaults. Anyone out there? Jobe? Silent Way? Anyone?

zigzagwanderer said...

If anyone out there does have the Portsmouth 1975 gig [see ; https://www.discogs.com/release/2660126-Captain-Beefheart-And-The-Magic-Band-Zappa-Commemorative-Set-1972-1975-With-Bonus] I would be eternally grateful for a copy .....

The links in the list I posted elsewhere earlier on this year are no longer , however I will have a new list available in a few months time . I am slowly uploading all of my Beefheart , the final list will consist of around 120 bootlegs , many in flac .

There are still about 30 or so that I'm searching for [Glasgow '73 anyone ?] but I probably have 75% of those known to exist .

Patti Smith - 2021-10-06 Pantheon, Paris (radio FIP) - VOODOO WAGON

PATTI SMITH IN FRANCE OCT 2021

Fascinating item from   at Voodoo Wagon (and his own site her(m)etic garage ) thanks boys! Patti her son and daughter and of course staggering quality being FM sourced

Patti Smith is in Paris for two concerts at the Grand Rex, Friday October 8 and Saturday October 9. It had been more than two years since the singer, a great Francophile, had not returned to France. A few weeks away from her 75th birthday, the rock poet keeps her energy intact in concert, and an asserted science of symbolism, as evidenced by the week she has just passed.

The life before seems to have taken back its rights, since Patti Smith is in Paris. After an essentially Franco-French musical summer, there is no shortage of opportunity to hear the most Rimbaldian of American singers in two historic monuments. Thursday, October 7, at an unusual time, that of the Sunday office, she entered the Pantheon to celebrate the 50 years of FIP radio by performing five songs in front of about fifty guests – a retransmission is scheduled on the antenna on November 26 at 8 p.m., with Sting’s concert recorded the day before. The next evening, she found herself under a luminous arch for the first of her two meetings at the Grand Rex, the splendid Art Deco room on the grand boulevards of Paris.

No album to promote since the latest one, Banga, date all the same in 2012. On the stage, Patti Smith was made less rare, since seven French dates – including two at the Olympia – had occupied her agenda in August 2019, a few months before a coronavirus appeared in China. Only the pleasure of singing and finding his audience justifies his presence in these places. At the Pantheon, she came with her family, accompanied, on the piano, by her daughter, Jesse Paris (a testament to her love for the French capital) and, on the dry guitar, by her son, Jackson. Not without having previously gone down to the crypt, where a much contested petition demands that the“Secret lover” of his youth, Arthur Rimbaud. But it will be a woman born in a land of blues, in Saint-Louis (Missouri), who will be admitted there on November 30: Joséphine Baker.

Expressive power

This voice playing alternately prayer and psalmody, anger and the call to arms naturally finds its place under the Christ of Hébert and next to the marble group. To the glory of the generals of the French Revolution. For songs of grace like Wing and Grateful, or a tribute to ” workers “ in times of pandemic, My Blakean Year. In the sweetness and intimacy.

At the Grand Rex, on the other hand, the amps and the big sound are out. The Smith children are associated with two lifelong companions, guitarist Lenny Kaye and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty, plus bassist Tony Shanahan, who has been around since the end of Patti Smith’s domestic retirement in the mid-1990s. New York punk rock , which it took to the highest in the 1970s, regained all its rights from Dancing Barefoot. At 74, the pythia with gray braids and an unchanged cloakroom (black on white) has lost none of its expressive power, nor of its art of provoking climaxes through lament, scansion, shamanism.

JIMI HENDRIX'S BIRTHDAY (He would have been 79) - ALL ALONG THE WATCHTOWER

I know I have said this before but it never fails to amuse me but can you imagine what it must have been like to be Bob Dylan and to hear this for the first time?! As near to perfect as music got for me, upon its release we merely stoood back in awe as Jimi redrew the boundaries of what was achievable with a guitar and someone else’s song (Bob Dylan) on what would have been his 79th birthday, we miss you! 💜 . . . . . . . . . . .

POP PERFECTION - Song of The Day - THE EASYBEATS ' FRIDAY ON MY MIND'

Lost footage of the Easybeats during their first performance on BBC's Top of the Pops has been found after 55 years. Australian painter Lucy Culliton discovered it while sorting through the belongings of her late father, former television director Tony Culliton, at the family’s home in the Blue Mountains. Hiding at the back of a shelf were a handful of reel-to-reel audio tapes – one was marked ‘Easybeats print – Friday On My Mind’. The survival rate of 1960s Top of the Pops editions remains extremely low. Of the 315 episodes produced from 1964 to the end of the decade, only five complete episodes are understood to have survived. The National Film and Sound Archive has now digitally scanned the 16mm film. Friday on My Mind was the Easybeats’ third Australian No 1 and charted heavily in Europe and the US. More than 100 artists have since covered the song, including David Bowie

TWILIGHTZONE ARTHUR LEE VINDICATOR 1972

Well the LOVE and Arthur Lee works keep on coming. I bought Vindicator second hand when it came out and was so disappointed. It is a rock and blues staple diet almost pub rock band with Arthur playing seemingly straight blues guitar that some have identified as Jimi Hendrix influenced which frankly is insulting to both. The rumour and myth always goes that it was Arthur who introduced Jimi to heroin but there us scant evince for this and yet this disappointing effort does little to convince us otherwise as it is nowhere near as poetic as inspired or lyrical from the first three Love albums. As his first solo effort there are none of the musicians we associate with Forever Changes this is hugely anticlimactic and I sold off the vinyl copy soon after finding it in the sale bins. It is now rare as hens teeth and the versions advertised on Amazon UK seem be Portuguese or Spanish re-pressings and technically it is no longer in print. It certainly seems to no longer be available in the States

If anyone knows otherwise I am prepared to take it down of course . . . . . . . . .

Twilight zone has also seemingly (hopefully) ditched their use of the UK unfriendly zippyshare and this comes down the pike courtesy of krakenfiles and work perfectly well. This is worth reading his won notes and shares the covers and insert
