BUTTERBOY | The Complete Obscure Records Collection 1975-1978 | Various Artists : Brian Eno, Gavin Bryars, Harold Budd, David Toop etc [2023] (10 x CDs)

Gavin Bryars - The Sinking of The Titanic (Obscure)

Completely Obscure

Well, here’s a turn up for the books . . . . . I know I bang on about my tutor at college, a Fine Art Painting Department remember, having been the composer Gavin Bryars and our historian being Fred Orton but this is a welcome treat that features both

[Fred wrote the libretto for Tom Phillips’ ‘Irma : an Opera’].

Brian Eno’s wonderful early label of ‘Obscure Records’ featured ten albums of ‘experimental’ classical music here released in 2023 by the Italian label Dialogo and now out of print ( it WAS a limited edition of only 1,000!) so here are all of them from Butterboy

Enjoy! I did but then I have them all on vinyl

Butterboy says:

"The Complete Obscure Records Collection 1975-1978 V.A. [2023] (10 x CDs)

Immerse yourself in the sonic journey that is the “VA - The Complete Obscure Records Collection 1975-1978 [2023]” box set. This collection clearly captures a transformative era in music, particularly highlighting the genres of Electronic, Classical, Post-Modern, Contemporary, Ambient, and Experimental. These genres are not merely musical styles; they are powerful movements that have left indelible marks on the canvas of music history.

Take the electronic genre, for example. It has not only revolutionized the way music is created and enjoyed but also democratized the music production process. Its influence permeates this box set, with its pioneering use of synthesizers and electronic effects.

They meld elements of classical music with modern techniques, resulting in a unique auditory experience that defies conventional musical norms. This amalgamation of the old and the new is a hallmark of this box set, underscoring its dedication to pushing the envelope of musical creativity.

The ambient genre, with its focus on atmosphere and tone over traditional musical structure, has significantly altered our perception of music. It has broadened our understanding of what music can be, demonstrating that it can serve as a soundscape, a work of art, or a meditation tool. The presence of this genre in the box set reaffirms its commitment to exploring uncharted musical territories.

Finally, the experimental genre encapsulates the essence of exploration and innovation that characterizes this collection. It’s a genre that dares to defy conventions, experiment with novel sounds and structures, and push the limits of musical possibilities. Its inclusion in the box set attests to its steadfast dedication to innovation.

In essence, the “VA - The Complete Obscure Records Collection 1975-1978 [2023]” box set is a glimpse into a transformative chapter in music history.
