Spirit - Harpo's, Detroit, MI. 1984 :: VOODOO WAGON

 Today's sublime offering from the Voodoo Wagon is Spirit from 1984. Now I think I have gone banging on about Spirit before and the link below will tell us but they were an early favourite and another title from Rock Machine Turns You On (1968) compilation that I stuck with but the weirdest story is when working at the Museum of Modern Art here in Oxford finding Randy California and Ed Cassidy billed as Spirit in the basement of my local pub, the Penny Farthing! Marginally as weird as finding Nico playing the night club in the Westgate Shopping Centre round the back from there more familiar with crowds of girls dancing round their handbags than to finding Nico playing her harmonium at 11.00 at night! 

This is The End indeed!

This however is superb and if you play one thing today make it this version of Fresh Garbage! Previously my favourite was the spooky far out 60s vibe of the original but this is the band on FIRE! The reincarnation as The Spirit of 1984 The Thirteenth Dream released an improved synth version that will blow you away . . . a taster below but live it's even better!

The Velvet Underground recorded this song in 1969. But as they were fired from their record company, it was not until 1984 that this pure rock'n roll moment was published on the B side of the 45 rpm ‘Foggy Notion' 

Personally I preferred The 'A' side and it must stand as the sole reference to Calamine Lotion in Rock 'n' Roll!!

Blimey! So the two gals from the Isle of Wight have even made it to Aquarium Drunkard! I have been banging on about Wet Leg for what seems like an age now (it's last year when Chaise Longue came out - get a grip - ED) and as they get more and more high profile, airplay and interviewed on the telebox we like them more and more . . . . . . . .introverts make some noise!

Well during the crash here and my lack of getting to the business, I missed the AD's article on Dennis Hopper post Easy Rider sojourn struggles . . . . .this is really worth a read. Ken Barlow never looked like this (British joke!sic)

"Between 1972 and 1985, Dennis Hopper was persona non grata in mainstream Hollywood circles. His exile came out of the critical and commercial failure of his second directorial film The Last Movie (1971). This film was the much-anticipated follow-up to the immensely successful and generation-defining Easy Rider (1969). Instead of doubling down on Easy Rider’s success, The Last Movie employed arthouse film and editing techniques, a non-linear narrative, improvisational performances, and a story critical of capitalism, colonialism, and Hollywood exploitation. Hopper gave the movie executives who placed faith and funds in him a bloody nose and for that indiscretion they let the film die. After this fallout, his personal troubles and drug addictions spiraled and made him an unreliable choice for movie producers and film directors to hire. Of course, he wasn’t completely off the radar. He pulled off some interesting lead roles in independent films such as Tracks (1976) and Mad Dog Morgan (1976) and appeared in supporting roles in Apocalypse Now (1979) and Rumble Fish (1983). He even knocked out a directing credit with the Canadian film Out of the Blue (1980). 

I loved this film . . . . . . 

What might be perceived as a desolate period in Hopper’s career has always greatly intrigued me. The films might be hard to find, and in varying degrees of quality, but one can never doubt the dedication that Hopper brought to these roles. In comparison to his early career in stock westerns and exploitation films and his later career in mostly straight to DVD fare, this period sees Hopper as a true force of nature and open to challenging himself, the actors he shared the screen with, and the audiences who dared to watch.

As Hopper was unable to score a decent mainstream acting gig in American cinema, he headed to West Germany to appear as a disheveled and burned-out music manager in German director Roland Klick’s White Star (1984)". (read on - link above)

The notes say this is Dr John on lead guitar break and considering he WAS a guitarist prior to teaching himself the piano after some Stackalee type shot his finger off (sic!) but if he could play like this then phew. . . . .I had wondered if it wasn't rather Leo Noncentelli from the Meters as he is a blistering guitarist who is often overlooked but hey, so was the Dr!

NORMAL SERVICE IS RESUMED! - Great Lost Elektra Singles Vol. 1 (1964-70 USA 2005 remaster) - PLAIN & FANCY

 Well that was weird . . . . . . couldn't get online without waiting for over 20+ minutes for a page to load yesterday and what with one thing and another and being an honorary fellow of  The Son's of Nargo The Bort's Deviant Subculture I have been feeling a tad paranoid so this didn't help (just because your paranoid and have the fears doesn't mean they're not out to get you . . . . . .) So I did a mini tidy round the vaults, swept out the dungeon and threw some bleach down me Ha-Ha and cleaned off the blood from the Iron Maiden and gave the scold's bridle a polish and we seem ( I say "seem") to be back to business as normal (what IS normal around here? Never met anyone normal yet . . . . . . )

Here then this is nice . . . . . . . I loved Elektra. They had Love and Arthur Love who introduced The Doors to their A&R men etc etc so I always rather liked that profile but this is a fascinating article and lost treasure

We have mentioned Pulp and Jarvis Cocker before and how the Sheffield born (?) Bookseller Sharon Murray turned me on to several bands I hadn't heard of when she came to Oxford. . . not least Pulp and 'His and Hers' became a constant feature on my Walkman whilst working in the book trade in Oxford I literally must have played nothing else for months (Sharon's recommendations also included the Irishman Neil Hannon and everything 'Divine Comedy' - so I bought everything then and since by him too!) I think I bought all the Pulp stuff but it still stands that His/Hers is my favourite album and is Cocker's writing at it's very peak IMHO

This from Guess I'm Dumb - [which he aint!?] and thanks for the reminder and 'Guess' notes this is the last the 'runt of the litter' of Van Morrison's extraordinary creative outburst of the late sixties into the early seventies . . . . . . but Hard Nose I discovered much later despite it not being in common view somehow I had stopped with St Dominic's Preview having bought the previous Astral Weeks (er OF COURSE!) Moondance, Street Choir, Tupelo Honey, . . . . . . Purple Heather is a great song for a peaceful Sunday too . . . . I did of course return with Veedon Fleece which I love after having bought the single 'Bulbs/Who Was That Masked Man'

Van’s incredible run of LPs ended in 1973 with Hard Nose the Highway, the “runt of the litter”.  I have this LP somewhere in a box, but found it pretty awful when I listened to it once or twice - Kermit’s Bein’ Green? Really?

       Nice entry on social media (twitter) from one Molly Hodgdon about Cats and I dedicate this to my daughter and her fellah who have two wonderful chilled cats [Buster and Buddy] and we shared a mutual admiration for their wonderful first cat, George, who I doted on and who befriended me and taught me a great deal. Not least how to cat wrestle, collude with ruining furniture, and above all laugh out loud at a cat hurtling downstairs in the middle of the night and up and across curtains and back up stairs because he felt like it! 

"It used to be pretty common for there to be cats on boats. They’d take care of any rodents who would chew on ropes or wires and spread diseases. Sailors were also superstitious and believed that having a cat aboard would bring good luck! This belief passed on to their wives, who kept cats - especially black ones who were believed to be extra lucky - at home in order to keep their husbands safe when at sea. Another popular superstition? That if a cat came aboard it was a sign of luck, but if it only boarded halfway and then left the ship, it was a sign of bad luck! Most ship’s cats are only found in modern times on private vessels but they have roots going back to early history. One such example is the Vikings, who took cats with them on expeditions." M.H.
